Ron Abuelo (literally ‘Grandfather’s rum in Spanish) is distilled from fermented molasses at the family owned Varela Hermanos distillery in Panama. This light bodied rum, distilled in a twin column still, is aged in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels for an average of seven years. The distillery is one of the few in the world that grow their own sugar cane.
The 7 Años opens with a slight sweetness on the nose, followed by light aromas that conjure floral notes, dry grass and hints of dry sherry. Aromatic hints of mixed nuts and coconut announce a palate that starts with some heat and evolves into a blend of light fruit, caramel and vanilla. The medium sweet, long finish introduces some cedar, medium dry sherry and spice before tapering off into burnished leather.
